The 1995 Mayfest Storm: The Night Softball-Size Hail Shattered DFW

On the evening of May 5, 1995, the kind of spring storm North Texans trade stories about for years rolled straight through Fort Worth’s Trinity Park—right into the middle of Mayfest. Families were browsing food stalls, kids were running between rides, and a line of clouds to the west didn’t look all that different from any other storm front. 

Within minutes, the sky went green, winds screamed past 60 mph, and hail the size of softballs began to fall. What followed became one of the most infamous weather events in Dallas–Fort Worth history—devastating not only an outdoor festival, but large swaths of Tarrant and Dallas counties, and rewriting the record books for nontornadic storm damage.

A spring cold front, a surprise surge, and an HP supercell

Forecast guidance that morning hinted at severe weather well south of DFW. By late afternoon, the setup shifted: a fast-moving jet streak over northern Mexico and South Texas helped nudge a warm front northward faster than expected. 

Storms fired near the Palo Pinto/Parker County line, and one cell quickly evolved into a high-precipitation (HP) supercell—a type notorious for wrapping torrential rain around its core and obscuring the most dangerous parts of the storm. As the supercell tracked east into Tarrant County, radar showed classic features (a hook echo, a bounded weak-echo region) and two distinct hail swaths. 

By about 7:10 p.m., that first hail swath intersected the Trinity River banks where Mayfest was underway. Thousands of people suddenly found themselves exposed on open grounds with little shelter. The National Weather Service (NWS) would later call the event one of the costliest hailstorms in U.S. history.

Witnesses described the hail as a deafening roar. Pieces measured up to 4.5 inches in diameter—big enough to punch through car glass, skylights, and lightweight roofing. Parents shielded children with their bodies and rushed for vehicles that themselves offered limited protection as windows shattered.

Emergency crews treated hundreds on site; hospitals ultimately saw around 400 injuries, with about 60 hospitalizations and several critical cases. In downtown Fort Worth, skylights—including those at City Hall—exploded under wind-driven ice. On some streets, hail piled into drifts measured in feet. 

The violence of the hail is part of why the Mayfest Storm looms large in memory; add in the storm’s timing—prime festival hours on a Friday night—and the result was a community-wide trauma that people still recall with startling detail. Local newsrooms have returned to the story year after year, revisiting images of dented vehicles, punctured tents, and a park transformed into a scene of broken glass and white ice. 

Floods in Dallas turn deadly

If Fort Worth’s signature wound was hail, Dallas’ was water. As the supercell crawled east and merged with a larger convective line, its forward speed dropped to under 10 mph. Rain rates spiked to extraordinary levels—gauge-measured bursts approached 9 inches per hour in parts of North Dallas. Streets jammed with Friday traffic became waterways in minutes, and low crossings turned into traps.

Roughly twenty people were killed metro-wide, the vast majority in Dallas County from flash flooding, with a smaller number of lightning fatalities also reported. That human toll—most of it miles away from Mayfest—underscored how a single evening can deliver very different hazards across the Metroplex. 

The price tag and the records it set

By the time the skies cleared, insurers and emergency managers tallied a staggering bill. Damage estimates reached about $2 billion (1995 USD), making it—at the time—the costliest nontornadic thunderstorm in U.S. history and the first single thunderstorm to top $1 billion in losses. 

Insured losses alone were assessed around $1.1 billion. In Parker and Tarrant counties, wind gusts exceeded 70 mph; baseball- to softball-size hail tracked in two long swaths, one of them three miles wide. Businesses, schools, homes, skylights, vehicles—anything exposed—was vulnerable.

Post-event surveys by NOAA and the NWS dug into how a day that didn’t scream “historic outbreak” produced such catastrophic, localized impacts. A few themes emerged:

  • Rapidly evolving boundaries. Mesoscale features (the sneaky northward push of the warm front) shifted the threat north faster than guidance suggested.
  • HP supercell structure. With heavy rain shrouding hail cores, visual cues for both the public and spotters were muted.
  • Urban vulnerability. In Dallas, short-duration cloudbursts overwhelmed drainage in densely built areas during peak traffic, a recipe for high-fatality flash floods. 

The storm catalyzed continued investment in radar (NEXRAD integration/usage), mesoscale analysis, warning communications, and flash-flood awareness. While DFW has endured major hail events since, the Mayfest Storm remains a case study for forecasters, emergency managers, and city planners on how compound hazards—hail, wind, and flood—can unfold in a single evening. 

The community impact—and how Fort Worth remembers

For Fort Worth, the images most associated with May 5 are personal ones: a parent crouched over a child, a vendor huddled behind a booth, strangers hauling the injured into pickup trucks and sedans as sirens echoed off the riverbanks. In the weeks that followed, stories of quick thinking and neighbor-to-neighbor aid became part of the lore—alongside the sobering tally of injuries and the dizzying tally of broken windows.

Mayfest itself eventually returned in later years, stronger on safety planning and weather contingencies. But the 1995 storm is not just a footnote for an event; it’s a benchmark for the region’s spring severe-weather season, the yardstick locals use when they ask, “How bad could this get?” Every late-afternoon sky that smells of rain and electricity carries a hint of that memory. 

What a visit to Trinity Park evokes today

Walk the Trinity Trail near the park on a calm May evening and it’s hard to picture hail stacked into drifts or festival tents flapping like sails. That contrast is part of North Texas’ relationship with weather: bluebonnets and bike bells in the afternoon; sirens and storm reports after sunset.

Lessons for every DFW spring

You don’t need a tornado to have a historic storm. The Mayfest Storm showed how hail can be the headline hazard in one county while flash flooding writes the tragic story in another. It reminded us to respect watches and warnings, to know our low crossings and detours before the sky opens, and to consider where thousands of people will go if a storm hits a crowded outdoor venue. 

The science has advanced and communication tools have multiplied, but the core message hasn’t changed: act fast when warnings arrive, and don’t underestimate high-end hail or fast-rising water.
