Texas Dryer Vents: Lint Build-Up Is a Real Fire Hazard—Here’s How to Prevent It

Clogged dryer vents are an easy thing to miss—and a common fire risk. The leading cause of dryer-related home fires is failure to clean the dryer/vent, according to national safety guidance. Annual vent cleaning and routine lint removal cut risk and improve efficiency. 

Clean the lint screen every load, and clean the vent at least once a year—more often for big households, pets, or long duct runs.

  • The laundry room feels hot or humid. The dryer and surrounding area run hotter than normal; you may see condensation on nearby windows.
  • Weak airflow at the exterior hood. With the dryer running, hold a tissue near the outlet. The flap should open fully and you should feel strong air movement. Little or no airflow is a red flag.
  • The exterior flap sticks—open or closed. Stuck closed = poor exhaust. Stuck open invites pests and weather and can trap lint.
  • Visible lint where it shouldn’t be. Clumps behind the dryer, on the wall/floor, around the outside hood, or on siding/roof near the termination.
  • Burning or hot-dust smell. Stop the cycle, unplug the dryer, and inspect or call a pro.
  • Dryer gets unusually hot or shuts off mid-cycle. High-temperature safeties can trip when exhaust is blocked.
  • Lint screen loads fast or tears. Excess lint after every short cycle—or a damaged screen—lets more lint into the duct.

  • Use the right materials. Smooth-wall rigid metal duct for the run in walls/ceilings; UL-listed semi-rigid for the short appliance connector. Avoid plastic/vinyl.
  • Short and straight wins. Keep the run as short as practical with minimal elbows. The IRC caps total length at 35 ft before deducting for elbows—always check your dryer manual and local code for exact limits.
  • Seal and secure joints correctly. Use metal clamps or foil HVAC tape at joints. Don’t use screws that penetrate the duct interior; they snag lint.
  • Give the dryer breathing room. Use a recessed dryer box or an offset connector so the transition duct isn’t crushed when you push the dryer back.
  • Terminate outdoors with a proper hood. No screens on the outlet. A smooth, self-closing damper that opens freely under airflow is the goal.

How to stay ahead (simple Texas checklist)

  1. Every load: Clean the lint screen. Vacuum the lint slot periodically. 
  2. Quarterly: Check the exterior hood—the flap should open freely when the dryer runs. Clear lint and nests. 
  3. Annually (or 6–12 months for heavy use): Clean the vent duct end-to-end (DIY with a brush kit or hire a pro). Schedule this before peak summer usage. 
  4. Gas dryers: Test CO alarms monthly; have gas connections inspected during service. 
  5. After remodels or moves: Re-measure duct length and elbows to confirm you’re still under the manufacturer/IRC limits.

  • The outside hood is clogged and you can’t clear it fully
