We recently slipped upstairs into The Balcony Club just after 6:00 PM, eager for a low-key night of live music in East Dallas. We’d heard it was a cozy, tucked-away gem—and it did not disappoint.
As we climbed the staircase beside the historic Lakewood Theater, we were greeted by a warm glow and the faint hum of a double bass warming up. The room itself is delightfully compact—perhaps seating for 60 or so—so even on a Friday night it never felt overcrowded. We snagged a table up close to the stage, where we could enjoy the music.
Speaking of music, it was absolutely stellar. That night opened with a set by Perry Jones & Friends. Jones, a gifted blues guitarist out of Arlington, TX, led his tight-knit ensemble through a wide range of rock and blues. The nimble fretwork was the real star—each crisp riff and tasteful solo showed off both precision and passion—while his bandmates locked in with seamless chemistry. It was a masterclass in live interplay that kept our feet tapping and signing along.
Later, local vocalist Zoe Piling took the stage. Her velvety tone filled the room with warmth and clarity, whether she was pouring her heart into a slow ballad or lifting spirits with an upbeat swing tune. What made her performance even more impressive was that she was still recovering from foot surgery—yet she pushed through the entire set.
A few practical notes: there’s a $15 cover charge on Fridays after 6 PM (cash at the door), and the club stays open until 2 AM nightly. Parking is straightforward—a well-lit lot behind BBVA Bank in the Lakewood Shopping Center, plus street parking in the Junius Heights neighborhood behind the building. It’s strictly 21+ (ID checked at entry), and there’s no kitchen, though you’re welcome to bring in takeout if you wish.
By the end of the evening, we both agreed it’s one of Dallas’s best small-scale music venues: cozy enough for date night, professional enough for serious jazz lovers. If you’re craving a laid-back Friday with top-notch live tunes, The Balcony Club is where you want to be.
